Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Tuesday emphasised that corruption was a global challenge and stated that the fight against it was a key priority, welcoming the actions taken by relevant state institutions.
Speaking to reporters regarding the recent detention of Grigol Liluashvili, the former State Security Service Head, Kaladze said that law enforcement agencies must be allowed to complete their work without interference, stressing the importance of combating corruption at all levels.
In his remarks, Kaladze noted that, due to the interests of the investigation, additional commentary would be inappropriate at this stage.
“We cannot say anything more than what we have already heard from the relevant agency. The investigation is ongoing in all directions. Due to the interests of the investigation, I cannot add anything further. Let us wait for the investigation, and all questions will be answered”, he said.
The official underlined that fighting corruption was one of the most important priorities not only for Georgia but globally.
“In general, we welcome the fight against corruption. This is one of the most important areas. It is a global challenge, and of course, it is encouraging that the relevant agencies are taking concrete steps to ensure prevention and, if anyone has committed any crime, that appropriate actions are taken”, Kaladze concluded.
