Rati Ionatamishvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Human Rights and Civic Integration Committee, on Monday sharply criticised the European Commission’s assessment of EU enlargement, describing it as unfair and indicative of a deeper crisis within the European bureaucracy.
“On the backdrop of such unfair decisions and double standards, this only highlights the crisis that exists today among Eurocrats. Apparently, this crisis will remain as the European Union’s black mark”, the Parliament official said.
He stressed that both Moldova and Ukraine face serious issues regarding corruption and the protection of human rights.
“In both Ukraine and Moldova, corruption is rampant, and human rights are being violated very seriously. This is a fact that everyone knows. If we compare these situations to Georgia, we see that Georgia has made significant progress, as also reflected in EU-commissioned reports. On this backdrop, the current unfair decisions clearly demonstrate the double standards at play”, he concluded.
The European Council recently removed sections on corruption and human rights from its evaluation documents regarding Ukraine and Moldova.
