Archil Gorduladze, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee, on Monday sharply criticised the European Parliament and the European Commission, accusing them of acting as “disseminators of disinformation”, a tendency he says is evident in the EU’s treatment of Georgia.
Commenting on the European Commission’s assessment report on EU enlargement, Gorduladze said that the institutions were unable to accurately reflect the realities in Ukraine and Moldova.
“If they had portrayed the actual situation in Ukraine and Moldova, they would not have been able to make critical statements about Georgia”, the Parliament official argued.
“They do not only fight against speech and expression - they fight against the truth. They fight against facts, including written facts, as is evident in the report’s failure to present the reality in Moldova and Ukraine. It is impossible to include examples of corruption, suppression of media, and persecution of political opponents in their own report while simultaneously making statements about Georgia, where the situation is entirely the opposite”, he concluded.
The European Council recently removed sections on corruption and human rights from its assessment report on Ukraine and Moldova, highlighting the selective approach in its evaluations.
