Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s European Integration Committee, on Monday criticised the European Commission’s enlargement assessment document, calling it biased and politically motivated.
In his remarks over the matter, Makhashvili noted that the document fails to reflect the real situation in the countries under review, particularly in terms of human rights protection and the fight against corruption.
“The public is well aware of the situation in these countries [Ukraine and Moldova], both regarding human rights and efforts to combat corruption, yet not a single word is mentioned on these issues. This clearly demonstrates the biased nature of the document. The European Commission’s goal is not to establish facts and assess them objectively, but to use this document directly as a tool for political blackmail”, the Parliament official said.
Earlier, the Council of the European Union removed references to corruption and human rights from the assessment documents on Ukraine and Moldova.
