Giorgi Sosiashvili, the Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Education, Science, and Youth Affairs, on Saturday criticised the European Commission’s report on the possible suspension of visa-free travel with Georgia, calling it another threat filled with falsehoods.
Commenting on the European Commission’s latest report, which raised the possibility of suspending visa-free travel for Georgian citizens, Sosiashvili expressed strong dissatisfaction with what he described as repeated pressure and unfounded accusations directed at Georgia.
“This is yet another threat. We have seen similar statements many times, and it is very unfortunate that they have descended to this point. The report is saturated with falsehoods”, he said.
The official argued that the document misrepresented reality and unjustly criticised Georgia for adopting legislation related to transparency and family values.
“What are they threatening us for? What is the main reason behind their threat? - transparency. I do not recall a similar moment in European history when a country was threatened for adopting a transparency law - that is, for transparent public life - and threatened for adopting a law on family traditions”, he noted.
He further claimed that such rhetoric undermined the credibility of European institutions within Georgian society.
“This is yet another injection of oxygen for their own agents - they see that the pulse is no longer there. But what is the point of this threat?! The sad part is that they have lost their own face and have completely undermined their European authority in the eyes of our society”, Sosiashvili concluded.
