Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Tuesday responded to comments made by European Commission Vice-President Kaja Kallas, expressing concern over perceived restrictions on Georgia’s ability to voice its opinions while pursuing EU membership.
Papuashvili addressed Kallas’ statement on social media, highlighting what he viewed as a troubling message for Georgia’s democratic expression amid its EU integration efforts.
Kaja Kallas noted that while some aspects of the US National Security Strategy may be unsettling, the United States did not face the challenge of seeking EU membership, implying that Georgia’s situation is different.
“What we read in the US National Security Strategy is not pleasant, however, the difference with Georgia is that the US does not attempt to join the European Union”, Kallas said.
In response, Papuashvili questioned whether pursuing EU membership should limit Georgia’s freedom to speak out.
“So, if you want EU membership, you can no longer raise your voice? This is exactly what the White House refers to as the Estonisation of EU foreign policy”, Papuashvili said.
