Maia Bitadze, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Environment Protection and Natural Resources Committee, on Sunday said the primary goal for the European continent should be ending the war in Ukraine, a conflict that has been supported by major powers.
Asked whether the EU’s double standards might change after the war in Ukraine ends - or whether these issues could persist until 2029, when the current European Commission’s term concludes - Bitadze, in an interview with Imedi TV, responded that “it is impossible to predict this with certainty”, adding that much of the current situation is likely to continue by inertia.
“However, one fact is clear: the attitudes of EU member states have shifted because the standards that the EU has violated - standards that underpin European values, equality, and democracy - have been clearly breached. Therefore, the primary goal for our continent must be ending this unjust war, which has been supported by major powers”, the Parliament official said.
Bitadze added that the Ukrainian Government was somewhat encouraged.
“One thing is a fact - I have said this multiple times. The policy of the Georgian Dream party is essentially based on this principle: every state must look after its own interests, and even a well-intentioned neighbour has its own interests. Therefore, we must prioritise protecting our own interests, using our resources wisely, and striving to maintain peace through the significant efforts we have devoted over all these years”, the Parliament official concluded.
