Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili on Sunday praised Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s address delivered during his visit to Turkmenistan, saying the Prime Minister represented the country with dignity and clearly articulated Georgia’s national interests.
In his remarks, Kavelashvili noted that Kobakhidze’s speech reflected the views and concerns shared by “every dignified Georgian”, as he spoke about existing challenges, the global situation, and key messages related to Georgia’s Russian-occupied territories.
“He [PM Kobakhidze] spoke honestly about the challenges we face, the global context, and issues related to the occupied territories - topics we speak about almost every day with sincerity”, Kavelashvili said while commenting on the Prime Minister’s visit to Turkmenistan.
The President emphasised that the Government’s main objective was to protect Georgia’s unity and future.
“Our primary goal is a policy of peace, peaceful reunification, and living together with our sisters and brothers in a united Georgia. Reuniting our country and continuing coexistence with our Ossetian and Abkhaz brothers is our main aim”, Kavelashvili continued.
He noted that Georgians, Ossetians, and Abkhazians have lived together for centuries, and that past conflicts and mistakes made by both sides should gradually be left behind.
“We must turn the page on the tragedies of war and the mistakes committed by all sides, so that we can once again live together in a united Georgia, as we did for centuries. This is our fundamental goal, and the process is ongoing”, the President said.
Kavelashvili also addressed criticism surrounding the international context of the visit, stressing that the Georgian Government will not respond to what he called “simple provocations”.
“We are not a government that will fall for such easy provocations or engage in speculation about why Irakli Kobakhidze and the President of Russia were present in the same space. We must wake up and understand the reality. Our message is clear to everyone: we must remain principled and protect the unity and future of our country”, the President concluded.
