Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on European Integration, on Wednesday described European officials’ statements about non-interference in other countries’ internal affairs as “ridiculous”, recalling Brussels’ past interference in Georgia’s affairs.
Makhashvili’s comments came after recent statements from European Council President António Costa and European Commission Vice-President Kaja Kallas, who argued that political actors should refrain from meddling in the domestic affairs of other states. Their comments came amid controversy surrounding US criticism of developments in EU member states.
He noted that when it comes to partners, no one should interfere in internal affairs.
“It is amusing to hear such statements from them when we remember the history - how Brussels has interfered in Georgia’s internal political affairs over the years, in various forms, and continues to do so to this day. When it came to the United States, suddenly they lowered their heads, remembered international law, and the principle of non-interference”, the Parliament official said.
