Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on European Integration, on Sunday said that the State Security Service’s investigation had confirmed that the Camite allegations were part of a coordinated disinformation campaign orchestrated from abroad and carried out in Georgia by radical groups.
In his remarks, Makhashvili emphasised that the investigation exposed a well-organised effort to spread false claims about the use of the chemical agent known as Camite, attributing the campaign to radical political forces he referred to as the collective United National Movement.
“The investigation has already confirmed that this was information terrorism, well-planned abroad and carried out in Georgia by radical groups - the so-called collective United National Movement. In reality, this was poisoning the public with lies, with the aim of provoking anger and unrest among the population. It is good that this multi-day lie has now been exposed. Society has seen who the real executors were and who came up with this idea”, he said.
The official further stated that the disinformation was aimed at instilling fear, anger, and agitation among citizens, thereby fostering new points of confrontation within Georgian society.
“The goal of all this was to create feelings of helplessness, fear, agitation, and anger toward the government among the population - and against this background, to spark new centres of confrontation within society. This is not the first time; they have tried this many times”, Makhashvili concluded.
