Georgian physician Giorgi Chakhunashvili has vehemently denied allegations that he or his colleagues suggested the use of chemical weapons or poisoning, stating that the work conducted was purely “clinical labor and the good will of doctors to inform the public if anything was discovered”.
The comment follows a recent BBC report alleging that the Georgian Dream Government used World War I-era chemical agents to disperse protesters during last year’s demonstrations.
“It is absurd, we spoke neither about chemical weapons nor about poisonings; this was clinical work, the good will of medics for the public to know if anything was found”, he said.
The BBC published an investigative article claiming that the Georgian authorities deployed a chemical substance dating back to World War I during protests in 2024.
The Georgian Government rejected the allegations and announced legal proceedings against the BBC in international courts.
Additionally, the Georgian State Security Service launched an investigation into information disseminated in the public sphere regarding an alleged crime connected to the claim.
