Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday said that, in parallel with the ongoing investigation, the Government planned to appeal to both the UK communications regulator (Ofcom) and, if necessary, international judicial bodies to ensure that the BBC was held accountable and retracted false information disseminated “with the signature of intelligence services”.
In his remarks, Kobakhidze noted it was important that the information released by the BBC did not go unanswered.
“It is fundamentally important for us that the false information disseminated by the BBC does not remain unanswered. Therefore, as already known, alongside the investigation, we plan to appeal to the UK communications regulatory commission and, if needed, international justice, so that the BBC is properly held accountable and withdraws the false information spread with the hallmark of intelligence services”, he concluded.
The BBC published an investigative article claiming that the Georgian authorities deployed a chemical substance dating back to World War I during protests in 2024.
The Georgian Government rejected the allegations and announced legal proceedings against the BBC in international courts.
Additionally, the Georgian State Security Service launched an investigation into information disseminated in the public sphere regarding an alleged crime connected to the claim.
