Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Monday expressed his confidence that the Georgian people would once again recognise the Government's efforts for the country, particularly emphasising the steps taken to prevent war.
Kaladze’s comments came after Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Monday reiterated that Georgia had avoided potentially devastating consequences in 2022 by refusing demands from foreign officials to take steps that, in his view, could have drawn the country into military confrontation with Russia.
He noted that by avoiding the war, the interests of the Georgian people were primarily served.
“I believe the Georgian people see best what processes were underway and what we all collectively managed to avoid. Of course, this happened thanks to the principled position of the Government and the policy implemented by the Georgian Dream party. Despite very large attacks and threats, which continue to this day, we defended the interests and future of our country with our very firm position. The fact that we preserved peace - the Georgian people benefited from this, the country is developing economically, and moving forward”, Kaladze said.
Addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Kaladze reaffirmed the friendly relationship between the two nations.
“As for Ukraine, it is our friendly country with which we have a long-standing relationship. Of course, I am heartbroken and it hurts me to see the Ukrainian people in this situation. The heaviest thing is how all this ends. I am sure the Georgian people will once again make the correct assessment and realize what we all did for the country”, he concluded.
