As the European Parliament moves to tighten transparency regulations, Peter Fischer, Germany’s Ambassador to Georgia, was criticising laws adopted by the Georgian Government, including the transparency law.
In his remarks, Fischer noted that under the current legal framework, Georgia would not be able to become a member of the European Union, and he further addressed actions taken against opposition politicians.
“You may adopt ‘foreign agents laws’, ‘transparency law’ or a ‘grants law’, but with these laws you will not join the European Union. The same applies to measures taken against opposition politicians. In a liberal democracy, the Government cannot choose its opposition - it must work with the people who are already there”, Fischer said.
