Archil Gorduladze, Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee, on Friday said that the ruling Georgian Dream team and the elected Government had “taken away one of the tools” that, in his words, the “deep-state-controlled EU bureaucracy” intended to use against Georgia.
In his remarks, Gorduladze noted that this tool would have hung over Georgia “like the Sword of Damocles”, allowing Brussels to argue that the country was experiencing democratic backsliding and therefore should not proceed to the next stage of EU accession talks.
“Members of the United National Movement and individuals aligned with them were fully prepared with ‘ammunition’ to provoke even more unrest in our country than what they attempted after November 28. This was also a preventive statement against those efforts", the Parliament official said.
He reiterated the Government’s position that Georgia has consistently fulfilled - and will continue to fulfill - its obligations because “this is in the interests of the Georgian people”.
“At the same time, we will continue to expose the authors of the blackmail and threats suggesting that Georgia must enter the war, and that refusing to do so somehow constitutes democratic regression. If anyone presents a document saying that accession negotiations will open, we will sign it immediately. But this is not being done for a simple reason”, he continued.
He went on to accuse what he described as “European bureaucracy” of seeking to stir unrest in Georgia and bring “active agents” to power.
“Unfortunately, the European bureaucracy wants turmoil in our country and wants to install its agents in the Government. But we tell them clearly: they will not succeed. The Georgian people and the Georgian government stand united, firmly defending the national interest”, Gorduladze concluded
