Archil Gorduladze, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee, on Friday said that if anyone presented a document to open accession talks with the European Union, the Georgian Government would sign it immediately, further stressing that “there is no deviation from the European path”.
Gorduladze commented on a protest rally planned for Friday, saying that its organizers and participants “refuse to face reality” or are “directly funded and guided from abroad in an attempt to revive a fading political impulse”.
“There is no deviation from the European path. If anyone presents a document that would reopen direct negotiations with the European Union, we will sign it immediately. By 2030, Georgia will be the most prepared country in terms of implementing EU directives and fulfilling its obligations. We are not asking anyone for anything - we are meeting our commitments. The rest is their decision”, the Parliament official said.
“The Government has taken away one of the tools used by the EU bureaucracy, influenced by the deep state, which has long hung over Georgia like the sword of Damocles - claims of democratic backsliding that could be used to justify delaying the opening of negotiations. They do this anyway, but without this clarification, such accusations would have been even more aggressively leveraged”, he concluded.
