MEP Michael von der Schulenburg on Tuesday said the European Union would face failure if it continued interfering in the internal affairs of sovereign states and attempting to build an empire.
Speaking at an event organised by the Central European research and educational center MCC Brussels, the German MEP cited Georgia as an example of the EU’s interference in foreign countries.
Von der Schulenburg noted that Brussels was pressuring Georgia to adopt a foreign and security policy that would be unreasonable for the country’s national interests.
“It deeply concerns me that within the EU we are trying to build an empire. This will never happen. Such dreams collapse - especially because of the war in Ukraine, which we are losing and which is not in the interests of EU citizens at all. This drive for empire-building has created a situation where small states can no longer play a role. The equality of sovereign states is essential. Every state must be equal. Interference in another country’s internal affairs is unacceptable”, he said.
“Recently, I held discussions on Georgia, where the EU is insisting that Georgia adopt the EU’s foreign and security policy - something that makes no sense from Georgia’s geopolitical perspective. It makes no sense for Hungary either. If we continue like this, the EU will end in failure. We also released a legal report on EU-imposed individual sanctions and found that they contradict both EU law and international law. Through such centralisation of power, the EU has turned into a monster that is shaping itself and no longer respects its own rules”, the MEP concluded.
