Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Committee on European Integration of the Georgian Parliament, on Friday highlighted the advantage of British legislation in regulating the fight against disinformation and false narratives while ensuring the effective protection of journalistic ethics.
Makhashvili made this statement while discussing the legislative initiatives of the ruling Georgian Dream party over a new media law modelled after the British legislation, aimed at regulating media objectivity and journalistic ethics.
“The common goal of the new legislation is, first and foremost, to regulate the issue of foreign interference. Georgian citizens should be aware of who stands behind each NGO, political, or media organization, as well as their financial sources and interests”, the Parliament official said.
“Secondly, we live in a world where a tsunami of disinformation poses a significant threat. The main advantage of British legislation, and the reason why it is considered the best, is its effectiveness in regulating the fight against disinformation and false narratives while also ensuring the robust protection of journalistic ethics”, he concluded.
