Davit Matikashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules, on Sunday said that a resilient democracy must protect the country from what he described as destructive and anti-constitutional political forces.
Matikashvili made the remarks while commenting on the constitutional lawsuit concerning the proposed ban on five opposition parties.
The Constitutional Court is expected to begin hearings this week on the constitutional lawsuit seeking the dissolution of five opposition political parties.
“A democracy that requires resilience is obliged to protect the country from destructive, so-called political forces that are anti-constitutional. These are forces that are managed and financed from abroad, whose sole objective is to destroy the Constitution and the country’s established order - something society has witnessed with its own eyes on numerous occasions”, he said.
“We hope that the Constitutional Court’s Plenum and its judges will make the only correct decision”, Matikashvili noted.
