Ongoing political developments in Georgia were discussed on Friday in a meeting between the Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili and Gareth Ward, the United Kingdom's Ambassador to the country.
Botchorishvili emphasised the importance of an objective and impartial assessment of the events taking place in the country, including the provocative and violent actions taken by certain forces, both during protests and within the framework of political processes in general the Georgian foreign office said.
The discussion also covered the issue of individuals detained for various legal violations during protests.
The Minister addressed concerns about individuals detained during protests, noting law enforcement agencies were acting in accordance with the law and the rights of detainees were upheld.
Another key topic was Georgia’s cooperation with international organisations regarding the ongoing situation in the country. The Minister reaffirmed that Georgia maintained active communication with all relevant stakeholders, providing timely and comprehensive information on current developments.
In this context, the Ambassador was briefed on Georgia’s response to the questionnaire submitted by 38 OSCE member states. The Georgian side expressed hope that the shared information would contribute to a thorough and objective assessment of the situation by OSCE institutions and member states.
Regarding bilateral relations, it was once again emphasised that the recent measures taken by the United Kingdom towards Georgia, considering the traditionally friendly ties between the countries, unfortunately was not contributing to the positive agenda of the current relations, expressing hope that relations between Georgia and the United Kingdom would return to their usual dynamics.
