Lasha Darsalia, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, on Thursday reviewed the 63rd round of the Geneva International Discussions by saying that the primary points of discussion included the necessity for Russia to fully comply with its international obligations under the EU-brokered ceasefire agreement of August 12, 2008, and ensuring the safe and dignified return of internally displaced persons and refugees to their homes in the Russian-occupied territories.
In his remarks, Darsalia noted that the Georgian delegation had expressed deep concern over the dire security, humanitarian, and human rights situation in the occupied regions, with particular emphasis placed on the ongoing illegal militarisation, including Russia's construction of an illegal naval base in Ochamchire and the reactivation of the Sokhumi airport.
“For the Georgian delegation, two fundamental topics remain crucial: the return of displaced persons and the withdrawal of Russian armed forces from the occupied territories. This also includes the establishment of international security mechanisms as part of the conflict resolution process”, Darsalia said.
“We are witnessing new developments in both security and humanitarian aspects, notably the reopening of the Sokhumi airport, which contributes to the worsening security environment and further militarisation and occupation of Abkhazia. These issues were extensively discussed during the talks. Unfortunately, we continue to see a destructive approach from the other side”, he concluded.
