Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Tuesday said that Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, influences Government decisions only within the scope of his role as Honorary Chair of the ruling party, while remaining largely uninvolved in government management and personnel appointments.
In his remarks, Kobakhidze noted that Ivanishvili’s advice was frequently sought on issues of key importance to the country, describing his recommendations as “invaluable”.
“Bidzina Ivanishvili influences government decisions within the limits that correspond to his role as the Honorary Chair of the ruling party. This means that he does not essentially interfere in government management or personnel decisions”, he said.
“At the same time, as the head of government and the second person in the ruling party, I often benefit from his advice when it comes to matters of crucial importance for the country. His advice is always invaluable, and turning down this opportunity, first and foremost in the interests of the country, would be wrong”, Kobakhidze continued.
The Prime Minister further emphasised that meetings of the party leadership were periodically held with Mr. Ivanishvili, during which key political issues were discussed.
“It should also be noted that Bidzina Ivanishvili has great respect for differing opinions. As a result, all views within the team are formed through open, in-depth and well-reasoned discussions”, he said.
“I will also say openly that in such open, thorough and substantive discussions, Bidzina Ivanishvili’s position most often prevails, which is once again a reflection of his exceptional competence”, Kobakhidze concluded.
