Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday said Georgia’s foreign policy was driven exclusively by national interests, stressing that cooperation with international partners would exist wherever there was an alignment of interests, while the Government’s priority remained serving the Georgian people rather than pleasing the governments of other countries.
In his remarks, Papuashvili emphasised that the country's interests were simple - the reunification of the country and the improvement of the population’s well-being.
“These two domestic political goals are exactly what our foreign policy relations serve. Whether it is relations with the United States, the European Union, or any other country, everything is measured by these two objectives: does it contribute to restoring our country’s territorial integrity, and does it contribute to improving the well-being of our people?”, he said.
“It is with this agenda that we speak with representatives of the United States as well. Wherever there is an alignment of interests, there will certainly be opportunities for cooperation. We act to serve our own people, not to please the governments of other countries”, Papuashvili concluded.
