Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday said that Georgia’s support for international statements backing Ukraine was driven not by expectations of gratitude, but by the need to uphold the rules-based international order and protect national interests.
Papuashvili’s comments came after a joint statement by 50 UN member states, including Georgia, condemned Russia’s intensified attacks against Ukrainian civilians and threats directed at diplomatic missions.
He noted that Georgia has supported dozens of international resolutions in favour of Ukraine despite what he described as the Ukrainian government’s previous attitude toward Georgia.
Papuashvili also responded to a statement by the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, who had thanked his Georgian counterpart Maka Botchorishvili.
“The signals we have recently seen from the Ukrainian authorities leave us hopeful that there is a reconsideration of their policy toward Georgia and the Georgian people. Let us wait and see. The future will show how seriously the mistaken policy that the Ukrainian authorities previously had toward the Georgian people and its government will be reassessed”, he concluded.
