Gia Volski, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party and the first vice speaker of the Parliament, on Sunday sharply criticised a recent article in an American media outlet that characterises Georgia as a hub for terrorist operations, dismissing the report as yet another funded, anti-Georgian campaign aimed at damaging the country’s international reputation.
“Another anti-Georgian statement and a funded campaign aimed at harming Georgia. The idea that campuses exist in Georgia where terrorists are being trained is, of course, an invented topic, created solely to produce an article aligned with the narrative dictated by Joe Wilson. This strategy continues. Earlier, China was on the agenda; now Iran is on the agenda. This is directly treacherous activity- organised, financed, and politically supported”, Volski stated.
Georgia’s opposition figure Giorgi Kandelaki has come under criticism after citing unverified claims in support of a controversial article published by The Washington Free Beacon, which described Tbilisi as a “fertile ground” for Iranian recruitment and terrorist operations.
The article, written by journalist Adam Kredo, relied on statements from several critics of the Georgian government, including US Congressman Joe Wilson, analyst Luke Coffey, and Kandelaki himself.
