Irakli Cheishvili, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Saturday accused Brussels and Danish authorities of applying double standards toward Georgia after Danish police used force to disperse a protest in Copenhagen.
Cheishvili commented on the recent developments in Denmark’s capital, where police used batons during the dispersal of demonstrators, drawing comparisons with international criticism previously directed at Georgia over its handling of protests.
In his remarks, the official noted that the response of European institutions to the events in Copenhagen highlighted what he described as inconsistent standards in assessing protest-related incidents across different countries.
“This is exactly the double standard that Brussels is applying to Georgia today. When protesters in Georgia were burning police officers with Molotov cocktails, attacking and vandalising administrative buildings, the dispersal of that rally was somehow unacceptable to the Danish authorities and Brussels”, he said.
Meanwhile, Georgian prime minister Irakli Kobakhidze addressed an open letter to European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, European Council president Antonio Costa, and European Parliament president Roberta Metsola regarding the events in Copenhagen.
According to reports, Danish police stated that officers used batons after protesters unlawfully entered private property and failed to comply with police instructions.
