Georgian prime minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday said that May 26, Georgia’s Independence Day, should serve as a moment of national consolidation rather than political confrontation, warning that attempts to create divisions on the day are doomed to fail.
Speaking to Georgian journalists in Baku, Kobakhidze stressed that Georgian society has been developing rapidly since the restoration of independence and that efforts aimed at polarising the public cannot succeed.
“May 26 should be for everyone, for all healthy political and non-political forces, of course, a day of national consolidation. When you try to introduce division into society on such a day, naturally it cannot have any success”, he said.
Kobakhidze argued that initiatives aimed at deepening societal divisions would inevitably fail in Georgia’s current environment.
“Such an action has no perspective whatsoever. The idea itself is doomed to failure in a society like Georgia’s”, he said.
He added that Georgia has been developing rapidly since gaining independence, with growing public awareness and civic consciousness making it increasingly difficult for what he described as divisive forces to succeed.
“They cannot mislead Georgian society”, the prime minister concluded.
