Kakha Kaladze, the mayor of Tbilisi and secretary general of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Monday described a recent statement by a member of the European Parliament Krzysztof Brejza as insulting, after Brejza claimed that former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili was being held on fabricated charges.
Speaking to the media, Kaladze argued that such statements indicate that the European bureaucracy is devoid of European values.
“Such statements are very grave and insulting. First of all, they cast a shadow over the European path. Facts like these indicate the state that the European bureaucracy is currently in. Brejza’s statement is also a clear example of how labeling generally occurs”, he said.
“This is not the first instance - we have seen resolutions passed, even in relation to Mikheil Saakashvili. Money was being paid for all of this. It was packaged as some sort of lobbying, but in reality, it was a quid pro quo. Such a thing is unimaginable. What are we fighting for when we talk about a European future and European values?! Unfortunately, the European bureaucracy is completely devoid of all this”, Kaladze concluded.
