Georgian Parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday said that rebooting relations between Georgia and the United States was in the interest of both sides.
Speaking to journalists, Papuashvili emphasised that the government's main criterion was to establish a new strategic partnership with the United States.
“The main point is that during a conversation between the prime minister of Georgia and the US secretary of state, both sides agreed that there is a willingness to reset relations”, the speaker said.
He added that Georgia has outlined clear conditions for what it would consider a true reset in relations. According to him, the key benchmark is the establishment of a new strategic partnership between the two countries.
“We approach this issue from the perspective of our national interests, just as the United States views its foreign policy from the perspective of its own national interests. We are glad that the secretary of state’s declared policy is that other countries also have their own national interests and that this understanding is taken into account in any dialogue”, he concluded.
