Levan Machavariani, the first deputy chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party faction in the legislative body, on Monday condemned remarks by the European Union’s ambassador to Georgia as “absolutely outrageous” and beyond all bounds of decency.
In his remarks, Machavariani noted that Paweł Herczyński, who until now had only criticised the ruling Georgian Dream party, was now attacking the country as a whole.
“He used to criticise the Georgian Dream party, crossed all boundaries, was biased, and unfortunately effectively presented himself as an opposition activist. Before the elections, he even called on citizens not to vote for the Georgian Dream. In this case, however, he is threatening the whole of Georgia and the Georgian people”, the official said.
Machavariani further questioned what response the ministry of foreign affairs would give to Herczyński’s remarks, which suggested that Georgia could return to “a period of civil war and a dark past”.
“This is a very arrogant statement. I don’t even expect any logical explanation or justification, but it is still interesting what response will be given”, he concluded.
