The US embassy in Georgia on Thursday reflected on the enduring bilateral relationship between the United States and Georgia, marking the anniversary of the mission's official opening.
According to the embassy, on April 23, 1992, just one month after the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the United States opened its embassy in Tbilisi. The move was described as a strong signal of US support for Georgia’s sovereignty and independence.
The embassy recalled the words of the then-acting ambassador Carey Cavanaugh, who characterised the opening as a historic event. At the time, Cavanaugh outlined ambitious plans to strengthen ties between the US and Georgia, expand cooperation across various sectors and facilitate humanitarian support during a critical period in Georgia's history.
“Today, 34 years later, we proudly continue to strengthen and develop a mutually beneficial partnership in Georgia”, the embassy added.
