Davit Matikashvili, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party and chair of the Parliament’s committee on procedural issues and rules, on Saturday said it was important for Georgia that European Union member states maintain governments oriented toward protecting national interests, family values, sovereignty, and traditions.
Matikashvili is in the Hungarian capital as part of a Georgian parliamentary delegation observing the country’s parliamentary elections. According to him, all political forces in Hungary were given the opportunity to freely express their views during the pre-election period.
“All political actors who wished to participate had the chance to conduct their election campaigns freely. At the same time, we observed attempts from Brussels and the European Union to influence Hungarian society and exert pressure, specifically in support of one political force, which is, of course, not appropriate. This represents an attempt to interfere in Hungary’s internal affairs. The Hungarian public itself should decide which political force it wants in power”, he said.
He added that for Georgians and for Georgia, it is important that EU countries preserve governments focused on safeguarding national interests, family values, sovereignty, and traditions.
Georgian MPs are observing Hungary’s parliamentary elections within the framework of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. Another group of the Georgian parliamentary delegation is also in Budapest on an observation mission at the invitation of the Hungarian side.
