Tomasz Froelich, a member of the European Parliament, on Wednesday lambasted the German federal foreign office for continuing to list Salome Zourabichvili as the president of Georgia on its official website, calling the move a “provocation” rather than a clerical error.
Froelich argued that the persistence of the outdated information undermines Georgia’s national sovereignty.
“The fact that the German federal foreign office continues to refer to Salome Zourabichvili as the head of state on its website is certainly not a coincidence or an oversight. It is a provocation. This is exactly the kind of behaviour we expect from Brussels and Berlin. The German ambassador has repeatedly interfered in Georgia’s internal affairs. I recall numerous European Parliament resolutions directed against Georgia, as well as Salome Zourabichvili’s visit to Strasbourg”, he said.
“Germany and the European Union must stop these provocations, as they constitute an attack on Georgia’s national sovereignty. We must respect Georgia’s sovereignty. This is the foundation of good relations, and it also means recognising Mikheil Kavelashvili as the head of state, as he was elected in accordance with the Constitution. One may or may not like it, but it must be respected in any case”, Froelich concluded.
Earlier, a member of the Georgian Parliament Irakli Shatakishvili addressed a parliamentary inquiry to the minister of foreign affairs of Georgia. The response from Maka Botchorishvili reveals that a diplomatic note has already been sent to the German federal foreign office. All of this comes at a time when the German foreign ministry has updated its data for other countries, such as Russia and Syria.
