Georgian president Mikheil Kavelashvili on Friday said that “Georgia seeks to reset its relations with the United States”, noting that the US shared the same interest.
“Certain forces are approaching all of this cynically. I want to ask our society, despite the speculations, to consistently listen to information from the government and from those of us who are in direct contact with representatives of a given state”, the president said.
The remarks came in response to questions about the prospects of US-Georgia relations, following a recent phone conversation between US secretary of state Marco Rubio and Georgian prime minister Irakli Kobakhidze last week.
“You may recall the skepticism during my UN visit when I met with US officials. Later in Milan, I met with [the vice president] JD Vance and Marco Rubio, and discussions there also focused on restoring relations, with a promise to follow up. You are also aware of the recent phone call with the prime minister. This is the sequence we are referring to”, Kavelashvili noted.
“Some forces treat all of this with undue cynicism. I want to ask our public, despite speculations, to continually pay attention to information from the authorities and those in direct contact with foreign representatives. Our goal is to reset these relations, and it has become clear that this is also the desire of the US [new administration]”, he concluded.
