Davit Matikashvili, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party and chair of the Parliament’s committee on procedural issues and rules, on Thursday said that in response to the ongoing global challenges, the Georgian government was pursuing a policy strictly focused on peace.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Matikashvili highlighted the growing importance of Georgia’s role amid what he described as “global turbulence”.
“An absolutely different political reality exists in the world compared to even five or six years ago. What was considered an unshakable order in global politics just yesterday has now been completely overturned”, the official said.
He emphasised that global developments are unfolding at a rapid pace, pointing to ongoing conflicts as key examples.
“There are two conflict hotspots near us - the war in Ukraine and the war in the Middle East. On this backdrop, Georgia cannot afford to face these challenges unprepared. In this context, we can confidently say that Georgia and its government are doing everything possible to ensure that the country’s policy is solely focused on peace. The results are already evident - we have economic progress, which is clearly the result of a peace-oriented policy”, he continued.
Matikashvili further emphasised Georgia’s role and the need to utilize it amid the global instability and tensions “both around us and worldwide”.
“The Middle Corridor is a unique route that dates back centuries - it is the Silk Road, originating from China and extending to Europe. Georgia has a unique opportunity to fully leverage its geographical location and create a peaceful route for economic connectivity and trade between East and West. This can be described as Georgia’s historic mission - to act as a peacemaker and ensure peace within the country”, he said.
“We must serve as a transit hub between Asia and Europe, so that amid global turbulence and crises, we remain not the only one, but an important connecting link through which the main artery of trade and economic relations between East and West passes”, Matikashvili concluded.
