Georgian prime minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Saturday reaffirmed the country’s commitment to European integration while emphasising the importance of preserving national identity, faith, and sovereignty during his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Budapest.
In his address, Kobakhidze highlighted the central role of Christianity in Georgia’s history and identity, linking it to the country’s long-standing aspiration toward Europe.
“Christianity is an inseparable part of Georgia's history, and this year we are marking the 1700th anniversary of its declaration as the state religion - a pivotal moment that defined the spiritual and cultural development of our nation”, he said.
“For centuries, our faith has shaped our values, culture, and moral vision. Faith has been a source of strength and a guide for generations, helping our nation overcome challenges and preserve its identity during the difficult periods of history”, Kobakhidze continued.
While reaffirming Georgia’s commitment to joining the European Union, the prime minister stressed that this path will be pursued with dignity, ensuring full respect for the country’s traditions, independence, and sovereignty.
“The Christian cultural foundation remains the central part of our society's identity. Throughout history, our ancestors perceived Europe as the space where their Christian identity would be protected. Accordingly, Georgia remains faithful to the path of European integration, but we will follow this path with dignity - with full respect for our heritage, faith, independence, and sovereignty, which is in itself an extremely difficult task”, he noted.
“We sincerely hope that Europe will reclaim its sovereignty, Christian identity, and economic strength before Georgia becomes a member of the European Union”, Kobakhidze concluded.
