Levan Makhashvili, the chair of the Georgian Parliament’s European integration committee, on Tuesday said Georgia has been applying the international sanctions regime properly and intends to keep doing so.
In his remarks, Makhashvili suggested that Eurocrats attempted to deflect responsibility after Georgia disproved formal accusations.
“They are trying to evade responsibility after we exposed the falsehood. This situation would not have arisen if formal accusations had not been made against Georgia. There was an answer to everything, and ultimately, the EU itself made the decision to remove the matter from discussion after it became clear that nothing is happening at the port”, he said.
The official further emphasised that despite external expectations or pressures, Georgia’s commitment to sanctions compliance remains steadfast,
“I understand that many may wish that something were happening in order to strengthen their accusations, but nothing is happening - nothing new has occurred. For four years, we have been saying that Georgia implements these sanctions honestly and conscientiously, and we intend to continue doing so in the future”, Makhashvili concluded.
The European Union has removed the Kulevi oil terminal from its 20th sanctions package. The EU has also welcomed Georgia’s efforts in ensuring compliance with sanctions.
