Irakli Kirtskhalia, the chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party faction in the legislative body, on Monday said the situation surrounding Peter Fischer, the German ambassador to Georgia, was “quite tragic”, emphasising that Fischer was viewed as a prominent activist and associated with the opposition United National Movement party.
Kirtskhalia criticised the German ambassador over his recent statements, accusing him of failing to adhere to diplomatic norms, stressing that Fischer’s remarks were politically biased and resemble partisan rhetoric.
“Let us wait - he only has a few months left in this country in his diplomatic role. It is truly difficult to describe such a person as diplomatic, as he has trampled on all the norms and principles of diplomacy”, the official said.
He further claimed that Fischer has disregarded the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and that his statements mirror those of opposition figures.
“This is a person who, together with the United National Movement, does not leave a chance to harm our country rhetorically or through actions”, Kirtskhalia continued.
He also stressed that, in his view, the ambassador does not represent Germany as a whole, nor does he embody Europe. Drawing a comparison, Kirtskhalia argued that current political elites in other countries do not necessarily reflect their nations’ historical values and democratic traditions.
