Political developments in Georgia in recent years and the legislative work of the Georgian Parliament were discussed on Monday in a meeting between Georgian Parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly president Pere Joan Pons Sampietro.
Papuashvili welcomed the OSCE PA president and his accompanying delegation to Georgia and expressed appreciation for their readiness to engage in open and constructive dialogue. He also emphasized the importance of an objective report by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) regarding Georgia’s 2024 parliamentary elections.
The speaker stressed that Georgia remains a committed and active member of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and will continue to support the organisation’s activities.
For his part, Pons Sampietro noted that the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly serves as a common platform for dialogue. He stressed that in a world filled with challenges, it is important for the OSCE to maintain its relevance and ensure effective operations. He added that the delegation’s visit to Georgia began with a trip to the occupation line and reaffirmed strong support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Papuashvili said the Parliament adopts laws in response to ongoing developments in the country and is actively working to protect Georgian democracy.
He also confirmed the Georgian side’s readiness to continue implementing recommendations by the ODIHR. In this context, he highlighted the adoption of a new electoral code by Parliament last year.
Both sides confirmed their willingness to continue dialogue.
