Georgian Parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Saturday said that foreign donors had repeatedly rejected the Georgian government’s recommendations regarding transparency and urged them to engage constructively in the process.
In a social media message, Papuashvili noted that this week the Parliament of Georgia adopted amendments to legislation regulating foreign funding of a political nature.
“This week, the Parliament of Georgia adopted amendments to the legislation regulating foreign funding of a political nature”, he said.
The speaker highlighted that foreign donors had repeatedly declined to follow the Georgian government’s transparency recommendations and had failed to meet their obligations under the law.
“Foreign donors have repeatedly rejected the government’s recommendations on transparency and have violated their obligations. Violations will have consequences. Correcting the situation depends on the foreign donors”, he noted.
“We firmly call on them to engage constructively in this process”, Papuashvili concluded.
