A report by Politico stating that ambassadors of European Union member states do not support a fast-tracked format for Ukraine’s accession to the EU has sparked political commentary in Georgia.
Levan Makhashvili, the chair of the Georgian Parliament’s European integration committee, said the scenario described in the article had been known for a long time, adding that threats directed by Volodymyr Zelenskyy toward Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán are completely unacceptable.
“First of all, it is absolutely unheard of to threaten the life of the leader of a NATO member state. This does not fit within any acceptable framework. What we are seeing regarding Ukraine from the European Union and from NATO is the outcome that had long been predictable. They were not planning to admit Ukraine either to NATO or to the European Union, and now such decisions are gradually being introduced”, the official said.
He added that if anyone is conducting an anti-European or disinformation campaign, it is “Brussels itself and the officials who once misled Ukraine with false promises”.
