Levan Machavariani, the first deputy chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party faction in the legislative body, on Wednesday reaffirmed the ruling party's commitment to national interests despite what he described as external “blackmail and pressure”.
“We promise our citizens that regardless of the pressure, coercion, or blackmail, it is out of the question that anyone will make us take a single step back. We will always defend the interests of our country and our people. The steps we have taken and the work we have done clearly demonstrate this”, the official said.
He further focused on the recent realignment of opposition forces, specifically the unification of the United National Movement, claiming that this merger was not organic but rather directed by “foreign patrons”.
“A few days ago, we saw the [United] National Movement party reunite once again, which, of course, happened at the behest of their foreign patrons. In this case, [members of the United] National Movement of all eras, all generations, all directions united and formed the [United] National Movement of all time. It is worth thinking about why the external patrons did not unite the [opposition] parties Lelo and Gakharia - for Georgia in this group”, he continued.
Machavariani noted that external forces were trying to separate Lelo and Gakharia - for Georgia parties from the United National Movement and mislead the Georgian citizens - as if they represented a separate force.
The lawmaker criticised opposition parties’ positions on a range of issues, including public protests, the transparency law, restrictions on LGBT propaganda, foreign investment projects, and education reform. He also referred to a letter sent to Brussels in November 2024 by four opposition parties, in which they had called for sanctions against Georgia.
“It does not matter how their external supervisors regroup them. Our citizens understand everything very well. This was reflected in the results of the 2024 parliamentary elections and the 2025 local self-government elections”, Machavariani concluded.
