Georgian Parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Friday accused Brussels of adopting a hostile stance toward Georgia despite decades of strategic partnership.
In his remarks, Papuashvili noted that the Georgian government was constantly ready for “hostile steps” from international actors, claiming that it was now a fact that Georgia was being targeted.
“It is regrettable that after 30 years of cooperation, during which Georgia demonstrated every manifestation of full partnership - including participation in military missions - this is being met with Brussels declaring the Georgian people as an enemy. They are treating us as enemies, planning how to strike us from this side, how to embitter us from that side, how to smuggle money in via suitcases, and so on. By doing this, they are destroying the trust of the Georgian people”, the speaker said.
He added that, in his view, confirmation of this stance can be found in a recent statement by the European Union ambassador. Papuashvili claimed that the ambassador effectively suggested that the Georgian people should take steps that would ultimately harm themselves.
