Davit Matikashvili, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party and chair of the Georgian Parliament’s committee on procedural issues and rules, on Tuesday accused the European Union of applying double standards, stating that such actions are fueling growing Euroscepticism in Georgia.
Matikashvili’s comments came after the EU Foreign Affairs Council discussed a document addressing foreign information manipulation and interference. According to representatives of Georgia’s parliamentary majority, Brussels - which they claim has repeatedly attempted to interfere in Georgia’s internal affairs - is now seeking to shield itself from foreign influence, a move they describe as further evidence of the bloc’s double standards.
He further noted that there have been several attempts from within the EU to influence Georgia’s domestic issues, including matters currently under discussion.
“When others interfere in their affairs, they strongly object. However, they grant themselves the right to interfere in the affairs of various countries, including those of partner Georgia. We demand a single standard; double standards are precisely the reason why Euroscepticism is deepening in Georgia”, the official said.
