Georgian prime minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday said the country’s sovereignty was a matter for Georgia alone, and no external actor should try to influence its political system in a way that contradicts the principles of sovereignty.
Speaking on what he described as a double standard in international relations, the prime minister said that while foreign actors often seek to intervene in others’ affairs, they do not tolerate interference in their own.
“It’s simple. When they intervene, they want things to remain that way. When others intervene in their affairs, they expect preventive measures. It’s a double standard. Everyone wants to stick their nose into someone else’s business, but they don’t like it when others do the same in theirs. Our interest is that we do not allow anyone to stick their nose into our business either. This is our matter. Our sovereignty is our business, and therefore, no one should attempt to advance their interests in our political system in a way that contradicts the principle of sovereignty”, he said.
He also referenced past legislative initiatives, including the Transparency Law, which faced protests at the time, emphasizing that all such laws aimed to protect Georgia’s independence and sovereignty.
“Of course, we remain firmly committed to this position”, the Government head concluded.
