Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday said that combating illegal migration was one of the top priorities of his Government.
In his remarks, Kobakhidze noted that over the past year alone, the Ministry of Internal Affairs managed to expel more illegal migrants from Georgia than in the previous ten years combined.
“The material and technical infrastructure has also been upgraded. Combating illegal migration is one of our top priorities. Currently, there are over 20,000 illegal migrants in our country. This is accumulated data. Over the past year alone, the Ministry of Internal Affairs managed to expel more illegal migrants from Georgia than in the previous ten years combined”, the PM said.
“Of course, these efforts must be accelerated. Strengthening the department supports this goal - not only with improved infrastructure and a new building, but also in terms of human resources. The department’s staff has already increased fivefold, reflecting our serious commitment to this issue. Our aim is that, in the medium term, our country will be entirely free of illegal migrants, and we are determined to achieve this”, Kobakhidze concluded.
