Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Wednesday commented on the suspension of a visa-free travel for Georgian diplomatic passport holders, stressing that the development was astonishing.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Kaladze noted that given the current circumstances, he did not expect relations with the European Union to change.
“European bureaucracy is in crisis, in a very severe condition. We have seen that even European states themselves are coming into conflict with one another on certain issues. The messages they send regarding Georgia are unbelievable - lies and falsehoods”, he said.
The official added that EU bureaucrats found it unacceptable that Georgia did not have a submissive Government.
“Why should we take steps that we already know will be destructive for our country and our people? Why should we do something that harms our economy? We are protecting our interests; we do not need conflict with anyone. Our main priority is the country’s reunification, and this must be achieved through pragmatic policy and by defending the interests of our nation and our people”, Kaladze noted.
The Georgian Dream Secretary General further stated that Georgia would no longer allow foreign ambassadors to interfere in its domestic politics.
“It will no longer happen that an ambassador of any country interferes and engages in political activity - that’s over, finished! We are an independent, sovereign state. What is happening in Ukraine - is this really in the interests of the Ukrainian people? We do not want such things to happen in our country; we want peace!” Kaladze concluded.
