Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó on Monday confirmed that Hungary would continue to block any attempts by the European Union to impose sanctions against the Georgian leadership.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Budapest following a meeting with his Georgian counterpart Maka Botchorishvili, Szijjártó emphasised Hungary’s steadfast position regarding Georgia’s sovereignty and its European path.
The Foreign Minister made it clear that Budapest views sanctions as a counterproductive measure.
“We, Hungarians, have always stood by Georgia's side; therefore, we have always vetoed attempts to impose sanctions against members of the Georgian government and officials. We have always been opposed to visa restrictions and have never agreed that Georgia should have to renounce its sovereignty for the sake of joining the European Union”, Szijjártó said.
