Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili on Monday said she had the opportunity to meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the opening of the Olympics, emphasising that the new US administration has inherited a challenging legacy in relations with Georgia.
“One thing is clear and recognised: the new administration faces a very challenging legacy regarding Georgia, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio explicitly stated that all of this needs to be reviewed”, she noted.
The FM added that alongside the meeting with Rubio, Deputy Foreign Minister Lasha Darsalia held several high-level meetings in Washington. As a result, the Georgian side expects that the issue of reviewing relations with Georgia will be addressed more actively on the US agenda.
“At the same time, as you know, our Deputy Foreign Minister was in Washington, holding meetings with a number of high-level officials across various institutions. This was also an excellent opportunity to discuss the details of our relations. We have the expectation that the issue of reviewing Georgia-US relations will become more active on the US agenda”, Botchorishvili concluded.
