Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Monday highlighted the importance of the messages conveyed during contacts between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili.
In his remarks, Kaladze noted that the Georgian Government took steps toward the United States and, immediately following President Trump’s victory, expressed readiness to reset relations under the new President and administration.
“This is a very important message. We have discussed this many times, and I will repeat once again: we are ready to renew relations, start from a new page, and reset our ties. The Georgian authorities are prepared for this and welcome the attitude conveyed in these talks. There is, of course, an expectation. The Georgian authorities took action and we emphasise that the unfair approach during the Biden administration was categorically unacceptable. We are an independent, sovereign state, and the true owner of this country is His Excellency, the Georgian people. We are a small country, but our past, culture, traditions, sovereignty, and independence must be respected”, he said.
Kaladze reiterated that under the new President and administration, the Georgian authorities were ready to start relations anew.
“The attitude of the Biden administration was unacceptable because it was based solely on falsehoods and unfair treatment, even regarding sanctions - there was no proper argument or explanation”, Kaladze continued.
He further added that the process of resetting relations may take additional time.
